FreeBSD is an advanced operating system for x86-compatible and other architectures. It is derived from BSD, the version of UNIX® developed at the University of California, Berkeley and is both fast and stable.

My work machine, glynthebearded is now running FreeBSD 8.1 - the adventures involved in setting this up are chronicled here.
